Becoming a member
Joining the library is free and open to people of all ages. You can join at any branch of the library by presenting proof of your name and current address. There is no minimum age for joining, but those under the age of 18 years will need to bring their parent/guardian to the library with you so they can accept the terms and conditions.
Children and young people under the age of eighteen years must get the permission of a parent or guardian to join the library. Parents/guardians are responsible for their children in the library, their children's selections and use of library materials and services including access to the Internet. If you are under 18 years, a parent/guardian should accept the membership conditions on your behalf
Register online
You may join the library online by clicking on the button below after you have read and accepted the membership conditions. You'll get a temporary library membership number and you can set up a library PIN. To obtain your permanent library membership card and avail of all of our services, go to your local branch library.
Conditions of membership
- To borrow items you must present your library membership card.
- Membership will allow you to use the library service as follows:
Adult: access to all library collections, services and to the Internet subject to the Terms and Conditions outlined.
Childunder 12: access to the children's library, to DVDs up to a PG rating, and to children's Internet services*.
Young Adult 12-14: access to the children's and young adult library, to DVDs up to a 12 rating and to children's Internet services*.
Young Adult 15-17: access to the adult library, to DVDs up to 15 rating, and to Internet services*.
*Internet access may vary according to the library you are using - please check with your local library.
- There are no fines for overdue books but membership may be suspended if you have long overdue items.
- All issuable items may be borrowed for three weeks.
- You may borrow up to twelve items on your card. These can be borrowed from and returned to any branch of the Library Service.
- Items may be renewed five times online or at any branch. Staff are happy to renew items over the telephone during opening hours, please have your library card number on hand. If a reservation has been placed on an item you have on loan a renewal is not permitted.
- Items may be returned at any branch of the Library.
- Membership is suspended if you have outstanding charges for lost items.
- Overdue notices are a courtesy reminder for your convenience.
- A reservation service is available for those items which are on loan, available at another branch or at another library service. You can place reservations online through the library service online catalogue or staff can place reservations for you in our branches.
- All costs incurred by the Library due to items lost or damaged whilst in your care must be reimbursed.
- If you change your address or name please notify us immediately.
- Your library card is individual to you and may not be used by anyone else. Bring your card to the library every time you visit.
- Please report lost cards to the library immediately. You will be held responsible for any items borrowed before the loss is reported.
- Membership details are confidential and will not be disclosed to other parties.
